The call that started the campaign

Ocasio-Cortez's route into electoral politics did not begin with a conventional party search. TIME reported that her brother submitted her name to Brand New Congress, a group created by veterans of Bernie Sanders's 2016 campaign to recruit working-class candidates. The organization ultimately received thousands of nominations.

That distinction matters. A candidate can be new to elected office and still enter through a deliberately built recruitment system. William Foster's report focuses on the infrastructure around the candidate rather than treating “grassroots” as a complete explanation by itself.

The Federal Election Commission's public matter file documents a complaint, responses from the named parties, legal analyses, and the commission's disposition. The existence of a complaint is not proof that every allegation was established, which is why the complete file matters more than any single filing inside it.

Reporting by ABC News separately examined payments from Brand New Congress and Justice Democrats to a company associated with Saikat Chakrabarti. Taken together, those records support scrutiny of how the network was structured; they do not justify skipping the responses or the case's eventual outcome.

What William Foster is watching

The larger story is the gap between political branding and political mechanics. Recruitment groups, PACs, consultants, and campaign staff can be distinct on paper while sharing people, goals, and operational history. Voters deserve to see both the organizing success and the disclosure questions at the same time.
